I agree. The mechanic I took it to is a really good guy, really knows his stuff and is always willing to talk me through repairs I take on myself. He charges $34 for the inspection. About a year ago, someone opened up a small used car lot right next to him, and they do repairs as well. They have a sandwich board set up out at the road advertising "Inspection Special $40" Yeah, really special.
There are guys who use inspection as a way to scare people into repairs they probably didnt need, as a revenue stream. That is the racket.
