That's the way the originals were made. You will find the end piece is machined to be a press fit into the axle housing. Using a 1mm (very thin) cut-off wheel you can cut around the inside edge of the weld to get it out. You may have to split the old section to get it out. Also you have to be very careful with width and alignment when you put it back together. I did it once on a CJ jeep many years ago with success, had it done on a '84 cherokee and alignment was always a problem afterwards. I would opt for a replacement axle housing, or a complete unit.
