Backfiring though the carburetor?

Hey guys for my own curiosity what is the primary cause of backfiring through the carburetor. Before i freshened and tuned up my engine i was having back fires coming through the carburetor and throttle hesitation. Since then VPW rebuilt my carburetor (not for that reason it just needed to be done) Ive got new wiring which the previous wiring was pretty sketchy and i found a bad connection on the ceramic regulator for the coil. Also the timing chain was really loose.
Im sure all of these could have been contributing factors but my guess is that the timing was off which i will fix with my first crank up with all the new improvements. Any other ideas or thoughts?
