You are not going to learn any younger. (one of the good things Dad taught me.) Might as well learn to overhaul a Saginaw by swapping the right guts into the right box.

My guts-box was from the swap meet, $10. Years later, thought I struck gold with a Dodge 4x4 Trailblazer box $40. Wrong. Right box, wrong rotation. Durnit. So, a bit of reading told me that there are basically two Saginaws, umm, 3 1/2" and 4" diameter 'pistons'. Everything internal will interchange, within each size. So, $10, $40, $25 for kit, and wah-la, my own personal $275 rebuilt hens-tooth box, for $75. Motors Manual came in handy. My special tooling was a wooden dowel, sanded to right diameter. Be careful on disassembly, count the little balls. And keep each set separate, balls, screw & nut. It's a very precise fit, balls from one won't fit the other.

Took me all day, but not many of may days end $200 ahead anymore.
