I owned a small engine and mower, sales and service shop. I was an authorized Kohler and Kawasaki service shop and dealer.
Kawasaki: Engines over 20HP are prone to early coil failure, as well as a frequent coil failures. Prices are going through the roof on Kawasaki parts. Kawasaki engines, overall, have about the same failure rate as Kohler engines in the long run.Kawasakis that have early failures, usually do so AFTER the warranty has expired
Kohler: The Courage series of engines are all total junk. They are a 500 hour engine, tops.
The Command series are excellent engines. They can easily last 3000-4000 hours, however a life of 2000 hours is much more common. If you have an early failure, it is almost always while engine is still in warranty. Once you get 100 hours or so on a Command engine without a failure, you are probably good to go for a couple of thousand hours. Kohler parts are easier to find at discount pricing, and generally a good bit cheaper than Kawasaki parts.
I much prefer Kohler engines in the 20HP and up size. Under 20HP, I like the kawasaki engines.
Just my 2 cents worth.
Jeff
