Really, "motor" and "engine" are both fine for the device that propels a MOTOR vehicle. For electric, it's always "motor" and never "engine", and for steam it's always "engine" and never "motor", but for internal combustion it can be either one and nobody is wrong.

Underground, a "motor" is a small locomotive that pulls ore cars around on tracks. It could have an air motor or an electric motor in it, but the whole machine is called a "motor" and the guy who runs it is a motor man.
