Attempting not to be accused of being rude here, the nut at the transfer case is round with little vertical ridges. There is no easy way to get your fingers on it. I have found that a slotted screwdriver will work to spin it off, using it as a lever against the little ridges.
The M37 trucks have about a 4" extension that brings it out of the cave to where you can get onto it.
