Although a tyro here, I had a similar problem. I had reversed the steel pipe 90 degree elbow, figuring it was symmetrical. Could never get everything together right. Then I noticed that there were different lengths of round pipe on either end of the bend. reversed the elbow and it went right together. Maybe this isn't the problem you describe, but I thought I would bring it up.
