hole in door

Since doors are in topic, I have a question about my doors. On the inside, opposite the exterior handle, and about midway vertically, is a hole, which is about 3/8" in diameter. Those with sharp eyes or who know how to zoom on my picture might be able to see it. Is there a plug or something that is supposed to cover it? What is it for? thanks. JH
