Placement of Jerry can holder on Flat fendered PW?

I see several pictures of flat fendered trucks with jerry cans/holders on the driver's side running boards. How are these connected to the truck. Sitting on the running board and Bolted to the running board?? or Bolted to the side of the box?? FLat fendered PW are scarce around here so i dont have one to look at. Thanks for the help
