It has a-lot to do with who is behind the wheel. And the tire itself.
When I built my Jeep, I researched tire size a bunch before i bought. Now I realize my Jeep no where near as heavy as my PW, but it is not exactly a feather with chevy drive train and cage etc.
I have run 33 9.50 R 15 BFG mud terrains for years and have not found anything that they don't work great in.
I have driven in super soft sand in Moab UT with no problems at all, I ran 17 pounds of air with no bead locks. The softer side wall of a radial helps here, when you run lower pressure it flexes and spreads out. This sand is soft enough that when you step out of the Jeep you sink about half way up your shins.

I would totally run my PW with low tire pressure in sand in a heart beat.
