It must have a lot to do with storage Michael.
I have 20 year old XL's that are still flaw free & ride just like new.
The only problem I've ever found with XL's or XZL's is that the sidewall is vulnerable to puncture...way way more so than any non radial but the upside outweighs the downside for me.
In the 20 years I've ran Michelin's, I've never removed a tire do to age problems or cracking. I've seen lots that are cracked from leaving them in the baking sun but no more than any other tire that's been abused.
Pretty common with RV owners to learn how to look after them in sunny climates...something we don't worry about here much :)
