I heard a guy on the radio recently who re-calculated all the economic statistics using the same methods the government used back in 1980. If they calculated it the same way today as they did then, inflation would be over 10%, unemployment would be 23%, and GDP growth would be negative rather than positive.
Everybody who actually has to work or buy stuff knows that the official numbers are bogus. To start with, when they figure inflation, they leave out food and energy. Housing stays in, which is convenient since it's dropped since the crash, and all the made-in-China electronic stuff stays in. It seems to me, if they're going to be selective, they should leave in food and energy, which everybody needs, and leave out ipads and plasma TVs, which nobody needs, but of course that would push the numbers in the wrong direction.
