At least based on what I've seen over the years in my travels. The parts books also show one part number per side on D400-D900 and W300-W500 in 1958-60 (1960 didn't have Ds over D700).

Avoid any running board that is not from a D400 or W300 and larger. The smaller trucks and COE style trucks use different running boards.

The 1957 and earlier running boards are totally different (though they may fit?). The 1961 and newer running boards are totally different and as you found they for sure won't fit.
