The earliest gas prices I recollect were right in that range, and probably right around that time too. I think our local neighborhood station was 32.9 for regular and 35.9 for ethyl, which is all my dad would buy. Chevron might have been a penny or two more than Shell. I remember a family car trip where he called it "highway robbery" when he had to pay 47.9 for ethyl way out in Eastern Oregon somewhere, maybe Fields or Imnaha.
