My experience on the M37 winch was that the cable is stronger than the aluminum housing and the worm gear made its way out the front of the housing. I had a shear pin from m series rebuild said to be the correct pin but 6 months after rebuilding the winch and liberally greasing the yoke, the yoke was severly seized and wouldn't budge even with the pin removed. I have often wondered if you could somehow fit a clutch like on a tractor brushhog in the driveshaft. This seems less likely to seize like a yoke on a shaft and you wouldn't have to lay in the mud to replace a shear pin if you overload.
