My trucks have the stock 230 L-head engine with 9.00x16 NDT tires and 4.89:1 gearing. Traveling the 13 miles to town with hills and a few stop signs before I get there, and then stop-and-go traffic once I am there, I get on average 6 miles per gallon. On longer trips where I am traveling on limited access highways for hours at a time, the best I have gotten was 16 miles per gallon.
It does not seem to matter if I am carrying a load or not, but there is a big difference when shifting gears constantly.
