The truck I am currently working on still has the flathead engine, standard pedals and it has the filter mounted on the firewall as well. It is mounted in the same general location, maybe slightly higher, but has rubber lines connecting it to the block. Personally i think the engine compartment is much easier to work in with the filter away from the engine. Also as someone else noted I would be wary of the vibrations through the hard lines from the engine to the filter.
