There is a solid metal piece that the screws thread into. It connects the 2 halves and gives it its strength. Rust forms around it and locks itself into the frames. If the glass is out it helps alot as you aren't fighting that being locked in there as well. I normally sacrifice the glass as it's cheaper and easier to get than bending up your frame.
Slow and steady tapping with wood blocks and a dead blow hammer has worked for me. Sometimes a large screwdriver in the joint can loosen things but you have to be patient and go slow.
