Brian,
I ran General Grabber AP's on several trucks during some severe winters in New England, and never had a problem; equally good on sand and good in the rain/dry pavement, but not too good in mud.
Travelled from Albany to Boston during a blizzard in February of '88 on the "closed"
Massachusetts turnpike/New York State 90, passed hundreds of abandoned cars and trucks, and jackknifed tractor trailers; pulled three cars back onto the road. And still made the trip under 4 hours....there were long stretches of highway with nothing on the road. I hav sworn by the Grabbers since. You can get them in many sizes, and are fairly quiet also.
