Hi Mark,

I've owned a '93 W250 (3/4 ton, 4WD) since new. Cummins diesel, 5-spd, 3:54 gears, etc. I've kept detailed records of every penny I've spent on the thing. The following includes all maintenance, insurance, and fuel costs for 126K of driving from the years 1993 through 2000 (approx 15K per year). Repair costs also include such non-repair items as a trailer hitch and camper shell add-on. FYI, I live in Southern Calif, so your fuel and insurance costs may vary. Add on your cost of money for a new truck, and this should be a pretty good estimate for cost of ownership.

Can't speak for the new ones, but I sure like my old one. Rides and runs like a vintage PW, but will do 85 mph when pushed. I average about 19-21 mpg, depending on speed and load, and about 16 mpg when towing a 5K trailer. The thing never breaks down, always starts first spin of the key, and runs like a (loud) top. I've told my wife to dig a big hole and bury me in it, as I'm never selling it.

Fuel: $8,635
Insurance: $5,998
Repair: $12,794
Depreciation: $18,000 (approx)
Total: $45,427/120,000=$.38 per mile

Regards,

Pete
