I test drove one with the Allison at Tony Chevrolet last week. It seemed to have decent power, though as a F350/Landcruiser/M37/WC53/B1PW owner the IFS front susp. does not interest me in the slightest.
I would imagine it would be very impressive with the ZF 6 spd, of course the dealers aren't likely to order very many with "standards" as they like to call this sophisticated all synchro gearbox with dual PTOs, rated at 650 ft-lb, with a proven track record on European army trucks up to 5 ton!
There are rumors and rumblings of cylinder head problems and even some quick-fix changes in the mill. Of course most of this information is derived from the Ford diesel site at www.ford-diesel.com
I would recommend lurking a bit at the GM diesel website, which has a dedicated Duramax section. I would also probably hold off for 6-12 months, since it is a completely new design, putting out about 1.25 ft-lb and 0.75 hp per cubic inch - a lot.
Just my $0.02 worth.
Charlie
