To clean out the block the best way requires
pulling the engine, stripping it to the block
and then dripping it in a hot tank (hard to find these days).
To do an ok clean - you can remove the "freeze" plugs and use a cloth hanger wire to
loosen the crud inside and then use a high
pressure nozzle on a hose to wash out as much crud as possible. Then put in new "freeze" plugs and refill the radiator. You can use
TSP (trisodium phosphate) as a cleaner.
The TSP will remove grease and other crud (paint). Run the engine to get it hot and
mix the tsp.
Don't leave the tsp longer than 30 minutes
and use the thermostat to get the temp up.
Flush with clean water twice.
You may want to flush the motor 2 or 3 times over the summer - the crud may take time to
loosen.
