The Bendix has an overrunning clutch in it, so when engine fires it won't drive starter at 50,000 rpm and blow up starter from centifugal force(see math below).It can still happen if the bendix is bad, rusty internaly. On a foot pedal type starter the gear will stay engaged until you release the foot pedal, so be quick about it.

Math: starter has 9 teeth, ring gear has 150, ratio is 16.66:1, if you wing engine to 3000rpm at start up and bendix don't work,starter will do 3,000 times 16.66= 49,999 rpm. You'll know because not only can't you dissassemble starter, you won't even be able to see light through it past the armature!
