PULEEESE!- Them ain't freeze plugs, they're core plugs, They plug the holes made in castings to remove the sand used to make hollow castings.Ice doesn't flow like water,even if ice were to pop a plug it would still crack the block somewhere else. The "paste" is dissolved rust from the inside of the block, the rubber plug is a lazy man's way to replace a rusted out plug, you can put a rubber one in w/out removing accessories, like starter.
