"Smart Trac"? Is this GM's and Dana's new hydraulic locking diff?
Even if it theoretically fit, I wouldn't do it in an older truck.
Without any doubt or equivocation, the strongest most reliable locking diff for the rear is the Detroit Locker. the newest Soflocker version is almost undetectable in terms of backlash. In any long wheelbase vehicle handling idiosyncrasies aren't an issue.
For the front, one can argue between ARB Air Lockers and Detroits, depending on usage planned, climate of your area, etc.
GM/Eaton's Gov-Lock rear diff doesn't inspire confidence in OEM locking diffs. The Gov-Lock has/had little teeny ratcheting devices, tiny springs, tiny this-and-that and tended to "grenade" relatively quickly.
If you have an 3/4 ton WC, M37 or flatfender type Power Wagon, the only locker that'll fit is the #1210 Lockright.
Locking diffs are the single greatest mechanical improvement one can do to a 4X4 for traction; about as significant as tires.
