Both my books,1950 and 1960,give the same basic formula for figuring the octane rating of a fuel. When the mixture ratio of isoctane/heptane matches the same burning specs of the refined fuel, the percentage of isoctane to heptane becomes the fuel octane rating, such as 85%isoctane to 15%heptane gives the fuel a 85octane rating unless a octane rate boosting agent is added such as was the case with the lead used at one time. The old low compression engines,4:1-6:1,could just about run on anything combustable after getting them started. Higher octane should be used if higher than 8:1 compression or extreme heat is present as it burns more stable in such conditions allowing for a more effecient, power producing burn of the fuel. In my opinion,HA!,I would treat these old flat-heads to top-grade fuel all the time,as they have earned it. They don't need it,but I try to give mine every chance to last and run its best. Of course you know ,most of the world still uses leaded gasoline ?
