Yesterday, I hauled my '57 flatfender to a job site about 100 miles away with my 2000 Cummins 4x4 dually. We were working on two jobsites moving equipment between them. One site was down a very primitive steep trail. The power wagon fitted with Michelin 11.00x16's was the only vehicle that could pull a trailer up and down the rough trail. The old landowner was quite impressed.
Late in the afternoon. We had a serious injury at the site. The old Dodge transported the injury up the grade then we put him in the new one. The terrain still required 4-wheel drive until we hit a decent ranch road. Then we hit the highway, straight 30 mile shot to the hospital at a speed not even the famed 11T3 could muster with its Brownie. Only a helicopter could have evacuated faster and it was doing a medical transport and was occupied.
I love my flatfenders, I wish they still made them. I am not crazy about the plastic and styling of the new trucks(not to mention the pricing) but I do use them (driving well over 50,000 last year, usually with a trailer). Maybe, just maybe, one day I can combine both, a la Dr. Cranium.
Sorry for the rambling.
