I think leaded gas has been around since the teens. Gulf's "No-Nox" brand was the first to make use of it and I have seen pictures of Gulf stations circa 1916 advertising it. Other petroleum co.'s soon followed and by 1920, "Ethyl" was available at almost any station at a premium price. It was dyed by the refinery to distinguish it visibly from "White" gas which was the cheapest because it lacked tetra-ethyl lead. Just my recollections.
