my 77 2wd had the same problems. though, it was a 2bbl. main problems were the coil wire kept poping off, the carb needed to be rebuilt, and a BADDILY clogged fuel filter (but would still let enough gas in to it to let me do some SICK brake stands) Anyway. sounds like a blocked fuel filter, or it could also be vapor lock. there is some wrap from summit racing (www.summitracing.com) that will solve that problem, if it is that.
