I have one of the early 98 24 valves in a quad cab shortbed 4x4. I average 15 mpg on a 50 mile round trip to work and back daily, and have seen a best of 18 on the interstate empty. I have the RV injectors (275 hp), 3" exhaust with straight thru muffler, and less restrictive air intake. I can pull anything I can hook to with ease. (20,000 lbs easy) I have the auto with 3.54 gears and taller than stock tires and still never run out of power-ever. The only drawback to my effective gear ratio of 3.28, is that the 24 valve like revs. I can actually turn the OD off and improve my mileage. Drive it like you're mad at it-seriously. My dad has had 2 powerstrokes and now the Isuzu / Chevy and I have pulled with and driven them all. Ill keep the Dodge / Cummins, and thats what Ill buy again next time- at about 300,000 miles. The other ones seem like cars in comparison, although the Chevy has good power and is quiet. Whats up with that low ride look on a 4x4 and little skinny axles up front though?????? You will not go wrong with the Cummins.
