Actually, according to the manual for this motor, there was a water pump made for it. I've been told the engines were used in small boats. I don't know what the chances are of finding the pump, but in any case it is gear driven and mounts in the place where my magneto is, plus setup has a special little cam section between the mag and the timing gears that drives the fuel pump. So assuming I could get the proper water pump, I'd have to somehow graft all this other stuff to the back of it, provide the other stuff with oil, and keep out the water. I've thought about it, but I know it would be one of those projects that quickly gets out of control.

I did the same as your dad with the magneto. My unit has a magneto, but it appears to be the wrong-handed one with the result that the points open when the magnet is not very much between the pole pieces. Hence the spark was iffy. I'm pretty sure it's wrong because I have a similar mag on another engine that turns the "right" way and it sparks fine. There were other signs that the mag had been swapped and worked on quite a bit. Anyhow after much monkeying with the mag I converted it to a distributor by adding a coil input to the cap and shorting the primary of the magneto coil. It solved the ignition problem, though of course now there's no way I could crank-start it (not that hand cranking was ever more than a theoretical possibility).

But you got me thinking. There is a belt pulley on the back of the main generator. I could add a belt-driven water pump. Also since it is a genset I could use a 120V hot water heating pump if I could scrounge one somewhere. Thanks!
