Franz: Thanks for that info. I know what you mean about the varnish and cord on the windings. The first electrical shop I worked out of (1965 to 1979) also had a motor shop division. I am going to open it up to take another look.
And yes they do loose their magnetism from sitting idle. Last night after reading Tom's post I got the box out after it sitting for over a year. 1st plunge - nothing. 2nd plunge - only a faint glow of the 15 watt light bulb. 3rd plunge - some what brighter. 4th plunge - brighter yet. 5 th plunge - about full strength.
