It does look bad, and I'm no fan of strip-mining coal either unless it's in Wyoming where there's nothing but flat grassland over it. It's impossible to "reclaim" a forest into anything like what used to be there. I've read they're starting to do some underground mining of the tar sands, which would be better for the environment.
I just wish the environmentalists would look at the Alberta tar sands say we've got to do more oil drilling in this country.
As for the Saudis, I just saw a chart where the US is almost equal to Saudi Arabia in oil production and is projected to be 20% or so ahead of them by 2030. That would be sweet.
