I agree that nylon ties have a way of getting brittle with time, although that's mostly a problem where they're exposed to sunlight. I like the highway sign strap idea. Figure 30 gallons of fuel is about 200 lbs, plus maybe another 20 for the tank, and hitting a good bump can give you an additional 1 G, so if you have two straps, each would have to be good for 220 lbs. That seems to be asking a lot of a plastic strap that's likely going to be wrapped around sharp things, subjected to road debris, and ignored until it breaks. Personally, I'd rather use baling wire than nylon ties for something like that.
