I think they went overboard because of the possibility of using them with radios, and wanting to be absolutely sure to eliminate all possible sources of radio interference. It wasn't just that they wanted radio receivers to be as sensitive and clear-sounding as possible. Back then there was also the thought that the enemy would be able to triangulate on the position of vehicles by detecting the electrical noise radiated by their ignition systems. I'm not sure if this ever happened on the battlefield or not, but it was enough of a theoretical possibility that it was considered in the designs. Not being able to be terribly refined about such things, the engineers decided to brute-force it by grounding and shielding the heck out of everything electrical.
