You've probably already tried that, though, in which case it's pretty simple to pop the top cover off the tranny and have a look inside. With the top off, you can slide the gears by hand and you can work the shifter and make sure the forks move like they should. The key to troubleshooting most things is "divide and conquer" and by removing the top from the tranny, you divide the problem into "gears" and "shift rails", at which point you can probably tell with a bit of inspection and wiggling what the real problem is. Be aware that with the top off, you can slide the gears into bad arrangements that lock up the whole gearbox.
