Joe,
All the comments on this thread are very good. But, I would like to offer a slightly different perspective for your consideration.
When I restored Kirkwood (my '52 PW), I wanted it to look pretty much stock.
I am told that the base/clear gives a high gloss look, like a modern vehicle. The single stage paint is said to give a slightly lesser gloss, like you would have seen "back in the day".
I used the single stage PPG (hardened) urethane paint on Kirkwood and it turned out very well.
For the project I am doing now, my M37, since it is a resto-,mod, I am going to try base-clear as Paul describes.
