I commend you for dealing with the guy and paying his jacked up price in order to get the truck. In the long run, the purchase price will probably have been small compared to what you spend restoring it. I'll admit that I have little patience for people who jack up the price as soon as they find out you're interested. Usually they were ready to scrap it (or so they claim). I'm especially wary of the ones who say they "just want rid of it" because they seem to have a particularly high idea of what it's worth.

It's not just trucks. Last week someone I know mentioned that Seattle was having a "gun buyback" and they would pay $100 for any gun turned into the cops. This person had an old revolver from some relative. I hate to see any gun melted down, so I said "I'll give you $200 for it sight unseen". I figure just about any gun's worth $200 these days. This person first said "It's a deal", but then later said they did some research and figured it was worth $1000. I said "do whatever you want with it." My guess is they've either gotten their $100 from the Seattle cops for it, or it'll sit in the back of the closet somewhere forever.

I've sold stuff for a lot less than it's "worth", but that's usually because the market is small and it's hard to find that one person who really wants it. If I get lucky and find him, am I supposed to jack up the price just because we both got lucky? There's probably not one person in 10,000 who would even recognize a carryall if it jumped up and bit them. To everyone else it's "some old junk car". If the local scrapper kid had found it first, he's have probably gotten it for a couple hundred bucks.

But good for you for negotiating that predicament, saving the truck and getting it for a price that you feel okay about. I look forward to pictures of the progress.
