Just under two years ago, I bought my '42 WC from a fellow in Ben Lomond, CA, and it was unregistered, untitled, no plates, and had a double stamped Serial Number (VIN, now of course) on the driver's side frame. He gave me a Statement of Facts which acts as an affidavit, and he hand wrote that the truck was a off-road farm vehicle for the past twenty years, and that he was the rightful owner. He also signed a Bill of Sale and Release of Liability. I seem to recall he gave me a signed Title Transfer form that I filled in the rest. He had no other paperwork.

I took all that and went to my AAA office in Visalia, CA. I was told to get a weight certificate, and a VIN inspection and she gave me a One Trip Permit to tape to the back window so I could drive it to the scale. But I had to show proof of insurance to get that far. My insurance agent was a little hesitant, but issued a temporary PL/PD policy add-on, with the final DMV issued VIN paperwork being required later.

Afterward, I got the VIN inspection from my local PD at my home ($7 charge), cop was a real polite guy who didn't give me a bunch of crap about the double stamping when I presented the Serial Number page of model year trucks from a link I found online. I am sure I was a little lucky with that cop. I had nothing else on the truck to show a VIN/Serial Number.

So, ultimately, I presented a Title Transfer Request, Bill of Sale with Release of Liability, Weight Certificate, Proof of Insurance, Statement of Facts, VIN inspection by law enforcement and $363 for my daily driver commercial plates.

It was worth it.
