In the late steps, you'll want to wet the surface with paint thinner so it gets a temporary sheen, so you can see flat spots. Use a Windex type spray bottle. And a spray on high build 'primer'. Polyester type. Think "spray on bondo".

A poor job of blocking in will look like "Body by Potato Sack and Sons". After all that hard work of welding and hammering, and the fat check to Body Shop Supplies.

This is the step that separates the men from the wannabes who ought to have stuck to nucuclear engineering. ;^) I'm terrible at it. I want to work too hard, push too hard on the sanding block, use too coarse of paper. I think I'm the father of Potato Sack and Sons.

Hey, for rough block sanding, I use a 2x4 with rounded corners, cut so it barely jams into a 3x24 belt. Then when the two side get plugged, you can slide the belt along a ways, and use what was the two ends.

'Light weight filler' is the better stuff. It uses silica filler instead of talc and doesn't plug up nearly as much paper. It's only 10% lighter- who cares?

So I guess that I too have gone to no power tools, block sanding only.
