I'm 100% with you on your conversion idea...this was the only reason I left the poly in the orange 49 I built because they'd made it fit without the use of hanging pedals & all the other modifications that in my opinion, lessen the experience of driving a PW.
The only issue I can see that you'd need to address, assuming you can find or machine an adapter for the conversion is that you really need an overdrive to run a diesel in a PW unless you can find a way to get 4.10 gearing in there without having to bastardize the project with new fangled axles & ugly one piece wheels.
A Brownie would be my favorite option...a mechanical OD would be the coolest way to go, in my day dream :)
