... this was a staple technology for our erstwhile enemies in WWII, Germany and Japan mostly. Both suffered a lot from bombing and interdiction of their fuel supplies. They did make synthetic fuels, but these were mostly allocated for tactical military use, leaving the Herrenvolk to work with what they could get locally, which was wood and coal. I think that Volkswagen actually made a purpose built wood gas car.
There is an amazing story about how when Douglas MacArthur first flew to Tokyo (Atsugi), and was driven to his hotel in a convoy of about every vehicle the Japanese had left that would run at the time - most running on wood gas.
