Those were my thoughts exactly. There was a guy in the 70's or 80's that drove a Pinto Wagon (I think)with a trailer containing the gasifier and fuel across the country to demonstrate. Dad talked about building it and driving from Kansas to Minnesota on nothing but what he could collect on the side of the road. I think it would be a great adventure, but the chances of it taking weeks to get would be high....lol. Good thing he's retired.

Personally, once again, I think the basic technology of a diesel engine is our best chance at simple independance. One of these days I may try to build some sort of oil processor to extract oil from something like soybeans or ideally hemp seed. Im not sure my 24v cummins IP is up to the task of experimental fuels, but I think my Jeep with a 6.2 Detroit or an old 12v cummins (In say a '43 Carryall) would be great!!
For the heck of it I did run my old 6.5 on 50% WVO one summer without any real issues, and I set up a temporary fuel tank and pre filter with a simple heater element made up of a length of copper tubing wrapped around the filter and spliced into the cooling system via the heater hose. It actually ran very smooth once it got warmed up, but was a bitch to start every so often!!!
