i investigated making a wood burning vintage truck. i looked all over the internet for a proven, current conversion. i found a guy, i believe in va or tn that converted a 235 equipped 1950s chevy. the guy had a dual 1bbl intake manifold. one port was set up for gas and one was set up for wood fuel. the flatbed in the back housed all of the wood burning stuff. in his model, you could start on gasoline, then start your wood fire, and then ween onto the wood fuel. i believe any gain in mileage and cost you would gain from wood burning would be spent in lost productivity and engine soot removal. i believe the best application of effort would to build a diesel hybrid. something that produced energy from burning what was available (multi fuel) and then use that to power electric motors through batteries. using multifuels in an truck engine is problematic, but running a diesel engine in what is essentially a stationary fashion is more tolerant of fuels it can run.
