Sounds like it will work well for you. The sheetmetal on our trucks is quite a bit thicker than stuff today so it's pretty forgiving. You still need to do staggered, short beads to keep the heat/warp down. You just can't get in a hurry when you weld a patch in.

The smaller wire will help as well but I've used .035. I would not recommend it as the smaller diameter stuff will be a lot easier to work with.

I do not own a small 110 welder but have used them. The guys who chimed in with them know their stuff so I'd say go with it. I've got all Miller stuff and mine is a 220V version for the duty cycle aspect and thick stuff.
