Thats right ,old fairbanks morse/2cycles in the old day were direct revsering and air starting.
if the eng. was going ahead you would stop the eng.andwait for it to stop rotating then the air would enter the piston that was going to fire next and drive that piston back down and the eng. would restart
in the other dir.[ no intake or exhaust valve] those engs just had ports in the cylinders
