I agree about the bag being a bad idea unless you put lots of dessicant in it and use a very heavy well-sealed beg (not a garbage bag or a tarp). Things seem to do worse under a tarp or partly enclosed than they do out in the open in terms of rust.

I would disagree about transmissions surviving in old rigs, though. I'm assuming at least some of Ray's trannies are opened up. If they're all sealed up, then sure, just fill them up with oil and let them sit. But if the top or PTO cover is off, a shaft is out, etc, condensation will ruin the bearings and shaft journals in short order.

All of us have had something like this happen. We get an old truck, we top off the fluids and start driving it around. All seems good, but then after a short while tranny or T-case starts whining. We tear it down and find that all the polished steel that was above the old oil level has pits in it from where it was rusty. Running it wore the rust off the pits, but eventually the pitted bearing rollers and balls got worse and worse and maybe even broke. It's very clear that there is a definite "rust line" in the gearbox. This is why it's important to move every rig even just 10' back and forth at least once a year to try to keep oil sloshed all over everything.
