For the 318-3 with NP435L transmission with granny first gear, 4.89s and 11.00R16 tires my thoughts were to stick with the hydraulic lifters and install the best all around cam for the tranny, gearing and tall tires. Truck will be for all purpose use and highway driving, not pulling stumps. I was willing to give up some low end torque for performance in 4th gear with a broader torque curve than stock.

Here is what Gary Pavlovich recommended:

"...torque style cam but with lots of gear and flexibility to launch at a desired RPM which allows you to use a larger cam profile. With non-adjustable rocker gear you will need a Hyd. cam (zero lash) and there are two profiles I would consider;
256/.450” (206@.050”) HYD. 110LC
262/.460” (214@.050”) HYD 110LC

Based on my truck and intended use, Gary recommended the 262/.460" performance grind. Gary said that with the gearing still being low it will have "...all the torque you want." In comparison the stock cam is 240/.410".

On the first test drive, the truck got into 4th gear by 25mph and seemed comfortable up to 60mph.
