On the fire department we always ordered the engines with an emergency shut down. If you pulled the emergency shut down lever it would trip a shut down plate that would completely block the air intake and stay tripped in that position until you manually reset the flap thus shutting down the engine. I had to use it one time at a natural gas leak that we were on. I was the Engineer-Driver and the wind changed directions and the engine picked up the vapor and stated to run away. Thanks to some good training from some of the old timers on the department I recognized what was going on and pulled the lever. The engine shut right down.

I have seen this happen at oil refinery fill stations when the truck driver left the engine idling while filling his tankers. The engine ran away, ignited the fumes and set the the loading dock and truck on fire. When it was done and said only the frame of the truck was left and it was bent and twisted from the heat.

I have often wondered why they don't have emergency shut downs on all diesel engines especially with all of the electronics that are used these days
